Why Small Communities Need a Lighter FTTH Architecture

Small communities, rural broadband projects, and new apartment networks often begin with only a few dozen subscribers. Buying a multi-port chassis OLT at the pilot stage can leave ports, rack space, and power capacity unused. Recommended Network Architecture

The upstream router handles internet access, VLANs, rate policies, and subscriber authentication. The OLT Stick handles ONU registration, OMCI management, and the PON interface. ISPs using MikroTik RouterOS (ROS) can keep their PPPoE Server on the router while subscriber traffic is carried through service VLANs from the vOLT.

Connect the splitter and test ONUs for registration, dial-up, throughput, and recovery.
Add subscribers gradually; install another module only when a new PON port is required.

Common Deployment Mistakes

An OLT Stick does not replace the upstream router's PPPoE and policy functions. Engineers should also calculate the optical power budget, validate ONU interoperability, and confirm that the host switch can provide stable power and airflow under continuous load.

This architecture fits 16-to-64-subscriber communities, remote sites, hotel zones, temporary networks, and new-market pilots for regional ISPs. Its business value is a lower starting point: reuse existing infrastructure, validate demand, and expand according to real subscriber growth.
