Hotel PON Design Is Not Only About Maximum Speed

Hotels use PON to reduce equipment-room complexity and carry guest internet, IPTV, voice, door-control systems, and wireless access points over fiber. The choice between GPON and XG-PON should be based on room count, concurrent demand, and service level—not simply on which technology has the larger headline speed.

Recommendations by Property Size

Integration with the Existing Network

An OLT Stick or microOLT can be installed in a compatible core or aggregation switch. VLANs separate guest access, office traffic, IoT, and IPTV. If the business model uses PPPoE, authentication can remain on an upstream BRAS, a RouterOS (ROS) router, or the existing AAA platform while the PON layer transports services and manages ONUs.

Estimate evening peak concurrency instead of relying on per-user package speed.
Calculate the ODN optical power budget and splitter stages.
Test planned ONU models for VLAN, multicast, and service interoperability.

For many standard hotels, a well-designed GPON network remains highly cost-effective. For dense properties and premium services, XG-PON reduces the risk that shared bandwidth becomes the next bottleneck.
