MicroOLT at the Network Edge: A Compact PON Strategy for Distributed ISPs

Author: AinOPOL Team Release time: 2026-07-30 08:28:09 View number: 82

Why Edge Sites Are Difficult for Distributed ISPs

Regional ISPs often deploy access equipment in small towns, communities, industrial parks, and remote cabinets. A traditional OLT chassis adds rack, dedicated power, cooling, and spare-parts requirements, while the first subscriber group at each site may be too small to use a multi-port platform efficiently.

The MicroOLT Edge Architecture

A MicroOLT or OLT Stick places one PON port in an SFP interface on an existing switch. The edge switch handles aggregation and uplink; the vOLT manages ONUs. A central router or MikroTik RouterOS (ROS) platform can continue to handle PPPoE, routing, QoS, and billing integration.

  • Core layer: internet gateway, AAA, PPPoE, and network-wide policies.
  • Transport layer: metro Ethernet, leased fiber, or wireless backhaul.
  • Edge layer: SFP switch plus AinOPOL microOLT.
  • Access layer: ODN, splitters, and subscriber ONUs.

Four Business Benefits

  1. Per-port investment: start a site with one PON port.
  2. Smaller hardware footprint: reuse the switch and reduce extra chassis and power equipment.
  3. Incremental expansion: add a module or another edge site as demand grows.
  4. Existing authentication: keep the current PPPoE, ROS, or AAA environment.

Operational Design Matters

A compact design still requires engineering discipline. Each site should document the switch model, SFP mode, vOLT serial number, ONU inventory, VLANs, split ratio, and optical levels. The management network should be separated from subscriber services, with recovery procedures for power failure, uplink loss, and hardware replacement.

Selecting Capacity

ZH-vOLT16 fits pilots and low-density sites, ZH-vOLT32 fits typical communities, and ZH-vOLT64 fits denser edge areas. Where more shared bandwidth is required, operators can evaluate ZH-vOLTXG64.

Begin with a Standard Site Template

The real advantage of distributed deployment comes from standardization: consistent VLANs, addressing, ONU profiles, monitoring metrics, and spare strategy. With a repeatable template, a mini OLT GPON architecture can reduce field work and help a small ISP launch new access sites faster.
